Nominator's project description

Professor Hutchings is a leading expert in the field of symplectic topology, in particular in connection with 3- and 4-dimensional topology. Together with Professor Clifford Taubes, his doctoral advisor from Harvard University, he developed the theory of embedded contact homology, revealing deep connections between Seiberg-Witten equations and Cauchy-Riemann equations in dimension three. During his stay in Germany, he will work on the further development of various forms of contact homology and their applications in symplectic and contact topology.
